Jade Cocoon - Story of the Tamamayu
I don't mind some games, that have great stories and atmosphere, to be negligent about other aspects of a game. But I also enjoy seeing a game which tries to reach a high quality level in small things. "Jade Cocoon" is, to put it simply, well done. The first thing that comes to mind is the game's graphics. "Jade Cocoon" is one of the best looking Playstation games, with graphical quality of "Final Fantasy IX". The village Syrus appeals to the player with its beautifully designed locations, both the interiors of the houses, the tower, the town square and the cemetery look great. The character graphics are also excellent. The 3D figures are by no means deformed, the animations are natural, and overall, the characters in this game look almost better (although not so originally designed) than those of "Final Fantasy VIII". The forest, where you spend the biggest part of the game, is also very nicely designed, with different kinds of trees, bushes, plants and with very good light effects. The music is as good as are the graphics: it has mood, it has atmosphere, and it is not very typical for a console RPG or for any game, as a matter of fact. In general, I find the most appealing side of "Jade Cocoon" the design of its setting. There are plenty of games (especially for Playstation) which involve stories about ancient civilizations, religions and such stuff, but few of them manage to create something interesting and mostly repeat the looks of popular religions, without trying to produce something creative (like using churches in "Grandia 2" or in "Threads of Fate" or Buddhist temples in "Final Fantasy VII"). "Jade Cocoon" creates a cultures which looks and feels credible. It can be perhaps described as a mix between old Jewish, Egyptian and shamanic traditions. The wonderful intro with its murals surely recalls the Egyptian art and the Bible, while certain rituals and the close relation to the nature the inhabitants of the world of "Jade Cocoon" can be found in many other mythologies. Overall, "Jade Cocoon" brings us to a very convincing world of an exotic tribe. Faces, clothes, movements, objects - everything is designed with care and good taste. I also liked the fact almost all dialogues have voice-overs.
The gameplay is fascinating for all those who have interest in experimenting and, well... breeding monsters. There are many types of monsters to choose from and to cross, and very vast choice of species you can obtain.
The Bad
The battles are unspectacular, to say the least. the battle engine is a very typical one, a turn based combat with menu choices. You can see the HP of your opponents, and you can also catch them, of course. However, the battles are just not that thrilling. Probably it has something to do with the game's story. The game's monster breeding aspect is so heavily emphasized, that it becomes the sole core of the game. All you do is go to the forest, fight some monsters, catch them, return to the village, breed them, cross them, make them stronger, go to the forest again, fight tougher monsters, catch them, etc. It is a pity such a beautiful presentation is wasted on a monster-breeding RPG. With the setting, atmosphere, locations and characters of "Jade Cocoon" it would have been possible to make a game of the Final Fantasy quality. Unfortunately, there's almost no development in the game, either of the plot or of the characters. After the fascinating beginning, you always expect something even more fascinating to happen, but it doesn't. You are forever stuck in the game as a monster-babysitter.
The Bottom Line
"Jade Cocoon" looks good, sounds good and has an interesting background. With more story, more conflicts, more interaction with characters, it could have been one of the best RPGs ever.
