First released on the Sega Saturn in 1998, Grandia was looked at as the pride and joy of the doomed system's followers. The game then got re-released on the Playstation in 1999, reaching out to fans who had never even heard of it. Acclaimed by some gamers as one of the best adventures ever, Grandia follows Game Arts' tradition of light-hearted and quirky RPGs -which may or may not be a good thing.

I played Grandia 2, but it's way not as good as this. Can't wait till I get my hands on Grandia 3! Saving up so I can buy a PS3, though (I played other games on my brother's system, but I don't live there anymore).

The word "classic" is used far too often when it comes to games, and, I'm afraid ( being an unapologetic rpg fanatic :) ) with rpg's in particular.

This, however, is a genuine classic, and a game which, for any rpg lover, will satisfy every aspect of what a good game should be.

Incidentally, I know there's a Grandia 2, does anyone know if we're likely to see it on our favourite site ( This one ! :) )

Dude, I'm afraid I have to say this. There is no "proper" place to use the term "classic". Its a purely subjective term, so a game can be "shit" to one person while considered a "classic" by another :)

This game is really awsome if you can get past the pig ugly graphics!
Is sold by the warehouse full in Japan and was realesed to critical acclaim.
I bought my copy when it got a Pal release. We hardly get any decent RPG's over here, let alone those from the U.S. and Japan.
I sold my Pal copy to a mate and regret it deeply.
Try finding a Pal copy second hand now. You'll find no-one wants to sell.

Much like Songwriter, I hate to use the much-overused term "classic" to describe this game. Since I was one of four people who bought a Sega Saturn in the US, i was fortunate enough to play this game long before it came out on PS1. "Classic" does not do justice to this game. I began playing Grandia, then started playing FF8, and stopped halfway through to pick this up again. This sits at the top of my list of the greatest RPGs ever made. Despite its graphical shortcomings, Grandia is worth playing for anyone. The first hour or two are long and slow, but the story is one of the best in gaming history. RapidShare blows, but deal with to play this game.

Pig ugly graphics? Grandia 2's graphics were pig ugly, these ones were advanced sprites, meaning awesome graphics.

Great game, one of my favorite RPGs... Probably my favorite RPG.

Oh Boy... this RPG is quiet great...
I like the soundtrack and way of turning the camera n stuff...
I'm still an RPG-Gamer who's addicted to those like Legend of Mana where you can walk around and kick some ass...
I just couldn't ever play games like Final Fantasy cause of the fights..
But just two of those make me play it... Chrono Trigger and Grandia...

Oh, thank god it has disc 2 here. I bought it used at my local EB(god knows how it stayed there long enough for me to pick it up o.o) but disc 2 got scratched so bad, it's unplayable x.x...stupid freaking sister

Well... when I played Grandia 2, and hated it... I had no hope for the first one. I just decided to try it... and so far, it seems to only share the battle system and menus and technical junk like that. The game seems to be a lot better then 2, in my opinion. I got hooked on this right away.... and I usually never get hooked when I have a ton of games to choose from. x_x

Awesome. I lost my copy of Grandia long ago. This game is truly an RPG epic, and definitely deserves a top ranking among RPGs. And personally, I quite like the graphics.

I really want to try this game, but the 001 and 002 natures of the first cd makes that impossible. Couple this with the fact that the mirror comes in four parts, I'd have to download two parts, wait 5-6 hours, then come back and grab 2 more parts... more waiting, then the last part... Is there anyway anyone could make a 1-2 part .rar mirror for both discs?

Final Fantasy VIII has a mirror that provides a single part for each disc... and Final Fantasy IX comes in two parts per disc... both of these games are four discs long... so, surely it can be done here.

I fail to see that scenario as an impossibility in any way.. if it seems inconvenient, JC, imagine uploading the entire thing... if that still seems convenient, imagine re-uploading the entire disc every time the link goes down as they periodically do. People put a lot of work into it so I suggest you SIU.

Thanks for uploading this so much, I love Grandia 2 and that is one of my favourite RPGs. However I have never played the original and most people said it's better, and sadly missing out PSX days and that most PAL RPG games for PSX are very rare, I'm glad this way I can play Grandia to see what's it's like. ^^

Tested and it works great, on CD1 anyway - will check CD2 out after I've done CD1. Which would take a while.

Thanks for uploading this magnificent game. The characters are great and loveable and the fight system and story kick butt.
Insofar as Grandia 2 is concerned, it was a superb game also, I have the pc version which is 2cds and the graphics are quite smooth and stunning at 1280x1024 res with 3d accel turned on. To me the story and characters in that one were also neat, but to each his own.

I followed the instructions and unzipped the 3 files (.001, .002, etc...) into a folder with 7zip, creating the following:

Grandia CD1.ccd
CCD file
1kb

Grandia CD1
Gem image
676,910 kb

Grandia CD1
Sub file
27,629 kb

I can open the .gem image with psxeven and it works fine, but i'd much rather have it on a disc to play on my psx, so i tried to use both CloneCD and Alcohol 120% to burn the .gem to a cd but neither recognizes it as a proper image file. I tried to find a program to convert it to a .iso but all of them are for .bin or .cue.

Did i extract or download wrong of is there some common sense i'm lacking in?

In any case it's a great game and playing it on the computer is still worth it.

It's on ps2 too

personally, i highly recommend playing grandia II on dreamcast [searching for the
game, and system if needed, will prove worthwhile] as opposed to playing the sloppy port that the ps2 recieved. i've never heard of or played the pc version, but i'm sure it indeed exists since cleido mentioned it earlier [i can't vouch for that one]. but people, please don't judge grandia II based on the ps2 port! I think the series really came to a head with the DC version of grandia II. and, by all means, the third game on ps2 is fine. not as groundbreaking as II [on DC, mind you! :thumbsup: ] but definitely not the sloppy, buggy mess that II was on ps2. :cheers2:

by the way, does anyone know of any notable diff's between the saturn & psx versions of grandia? unfortunately, i'm one of the many folks that completely ignored the sega saturn... :sadsmiley: now i find myself downloading games like nights & panzer dragoon to catch up on what i missed :crazyeyes:

i own this game, so i haven't played the image file. but i have the very same problem with the Tales of Destiny II image though. i dunno what it is...

Thank you for uploading this game. This is one of my favorites. One of the sections of this game inspired an idea for a novel. I haven't written the novel yet but I still want to some day.

Angering news. I downloaded jerryperry's mirror of this game. Yeeeeeah.... I'm 20 hours into the game, nearing the second disc... the top of the twin towers, when the video starts to tell you more about the Angelou Civilization, it freezes... TT_TT

and now my savegame won't work with any of the other downloads. I'm screwed. wahh...

Grandia... a grand game indeed, solid and very fun gameplay, nice characters, funny and light heart situations, but also, serious ones, this is a game packed with a lot of stuff, it is a long run, but the story delivers, plus it really has ROLEPLAYING elements that sometimes are missing in a RolePlayingGame(RPG), like when you are on the table eating, you can chat with other characters, adding a lot of fun and development, overall an awesome experience, thanks a million for the upload!!!

Grandia is a console role-playing game and the first title in the Grandia series developed by Game Arts originally for the Sega Saturn in 1997. Since then, it has been ported to the Sony PlayStation, and was published in North America and Europe for the first time by SCEA and Ubisoft respectively in 1999 and 2001. It was later repackaged and sold at a budget price as part of the "Ubisoft Exclusive" range in Europe. In April 2009, the PlayStation port of Grandia was released in Japan on the Playstation Network as a downloadable title in the PSOne Classics range, to celebrate an upcoming announcement for details regarding Grandia Online.

The story of Grandia takes place in a period of steadily-advancing technology, much like the Industrial Revolution. The task of excavating ruins has been taken over by the Garlyle Forces, a military organization that seizes powerful relics for its own benefit. One of these items falls into the hands of Justin, a would-be adventurer from the town of Parm. Guided by a holographic image coming from the relic, he resolves to venture outside his hometown to find the mythical city of Alent.

Grandia is often compared with the Studio Ghibli anime film Laputa: Castle in the Sky, released in 1986. They share a very similar plot, and their visual designs are also similar.
