Here's a great guide on how to properly setup screen configurations.
I prefer to have the look as the original hardware, that means no filters of any kind.
This is a very good guide on how to achieve that. :)

NO please don't use xISO, it'll screw up your x-iso file.
Use Qwix instead.

you never gonna see xbox run retro games in the same way as their original hardware used to display them, thats because "xcrapx" cannot output 240p, only that crappy 480i, that means no scanlines.

PCSXbox has a feature to look for cheats or trainers online, if you have your Xbox connected to the line you can download some. I downloaded stuff for other PS1 games like this and it works.

Hmmm...I don't know about that but ZsnesXbox displays the SNES games better than they looked on real hardware, also with 5.1 surround sound through the home theater and with vibration feedback working on many of the games it's just amazing.

PS1 games also look slightly better with the filters and they definitely look much better than what they did on the PS2.

Main post updated with new

MednafenX_Lynx v4
MednafenX_PCE v5
NeoGenesis v23
ZsnexBox 3.5

emulators. :)

* NeoGenesis Sega Genesis/Megadrive/32X/SegaCD/MegaCD Emulator for XBox v23
* MednafenX-PCE - PCE/TG16 Emulator for XBox v5
* MednafenX-Lynx - Lynx Emulator for XBox v4
What's new/fixed:
-Added support for video previews. Video previews must be in xmv format and placed in the Videos folder. Users running at 1080i need to adjust the font for the game select screen to the following:
Game Select Settings
Max Text Width: 220
Number of Lines: 10
Font Size: 20
Line Height: 32
The Xbox does not have enough CPU power to render several true type fonts at 1080i and update the video preview. This does not apply to 480i/p or 720p.

* ZsnexBox 3.5
What's new/fixed:
-Fixed bug where preview border was displayed when preview border was disabled.
-Freed several megabytes of RAM. This fixes the screenshot display problem in 1080i.
-Added support for sub folders in the Images directory.
This will allow users to sort the images (i.e. a folder for Maps, Manuals, Strategy Guides, etc...). Much higher resolution images are now supported.

Main post updated with MednafenX-NES v10.

MednafenX-NES - NES Emulator for XBox v10

Well I released this because it was the one x-port "Medna" emu that didn't make the last round of releases by Nes6502. Special thanks to Nes6502 for his proof of concept.

----------------
Added support for video previews. Video previews must be in xmv format . Users running at 1080i need to adjust the font for the game select screen to the following:

Game Select Settings
Max Text Width: 220
Number of Lines: 10
Font Size: 20
Line Height: 32

The Xbox does not have enough CPU power to render several true type
fonts at 1080i and update the video preview. This does not apply to
480i/p or 720p.

----------------
Because of this, though. I had to make numerous changes to the x-port interface. Here is what they were.

Created a new configuration menu called "Screenshot/Movie Preview Configuration". It now contains the new Movie Preview settings as well as all the screenshot related settings that USED to be in "General Settings".

The "Screenshot/Movie Preview Configuration" is as follows.

* Show Screenshots? No, Screenshots Only, Movies Only, Screenshots 1st- Then Movies, Movies 1st- Then Screenshots.
* Play Sound From Movie? Yes, No
* Seconds before auto-advancing screenshot - #
* Auto-Screenshot Capture Delay - #
* Show Screenshots While Scrolling? Yes, No

These were removed from the "General Settings Menu" and I shuffled around the "General Settings Menu" to better balance things.

You can set the movie/previews directory in the "Change Default Directories" section. The default location is "D:\VIDEOS\ in order to save confusion with the other two recent Medna releases. However if you point the movie/previews directory to any drive other than "D:" it changes to the standard x-port emu format of "E:\VIDEOS\EMU_NAME". That way if you want to you can store all your movies in the same directory and avoid mix-ups with other x-port emu's as they are released with movie preview.

The movie name has to be exactly the same as the ROM name. Only one movie per game.

All settings are saved in the emu_name.ini file.

----------------
This is a recompiled version of the latest mednafenx with a correction to a typo in the last release that disabled the ability to load custom palettes.

This version of mednafenx also includes the correct nes color palette. (this is enabled by default) You can always autogenerate your own palette or load your own palette. Included in this release is the old palette and the RGB palette. The RGB palette is colors that can be output by a svideo modded nes.

ENJOY!! please post any issues on the thread located in xport projects.

Compiled by madmab
new palette brought to you by XtecuterX73 and Madmab :)

Are they the same? Did mednafen take over from Hugo-X?

Which has the best compatiblity?

MednafenX-PCE v5
PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16/Turbo Duo

Dose it need Bios? Where Can I get roms?

You don't need bios files. Upload the game files to your XBOX : CUE, ISO and MP3 or wave files in a directory. Then in the MednafenX-PCE launch the CUE file. This emulator also features preset CUE files.

You should add xSnes9x 1.42 WiP to the list, isn't the newest build anymore, but it's WAY better than Snes9xbox that is just an early alpha version (the programmer admitted that he actually didn't gave a shit bout this emulator since there already was a good port of Snes9x and that he stopped working on it three years before it's public release). The sound's better than in ZsnesxBox 3.5 (tested with F-Zero and The Legend of Zelda III, it does sound like it's supposed to) and in opposition to Snes9xbox is DOES actually support PAL games wich was the biggest flaw of this build. The compatibility isn't good as in ZsnesxBox (very few games have glitches, mostly stuff with special chipset like Megaman X3, 97% of all games run flawlessly), but overall it's the most accurate emulator you can get imho.

I recommend xSnes9x 1.42 WiP as default emulator and ZsnesxBox 3.5 for compatibility, this should be the ultimate combo for SNES emulation.

I would upload it, but i'm out of bandwith for this month. :elaugh:

i agree with you as i find compatibility really a pain with snes9xbox and i use zsnexbox3.5 and xsne9x1.42,also the skins you get with 1.42 are good.
so heres a download for xsnes9x 1.42 wip.

I have added xSnes9x 1.42 to the list. ;)
I just don't get why people still use it.
There's no way of getting a clean non filtered display with that emu. :(

Chaosritter
05-25-2009, 03:12 PM
Really?

Mine runs with the linear Hardware filter and without Software filter, looks just like an real SNES. It also supports 10x11 Pixel ratio, Point filtering and the screen is freely adjustable, means you can even keep the original screen ratio.

What are your specs? I use an 37cm CRT PAL TV, an cheap Hama videoswitch who has an RGB switch and this cable from Big Ben:

http://www.konsolenkost.de/images/produkte/5734677.jpg

It's just like ZsnesxBox, but with better sound and without screen tearing. Maybe you just got an crappy AV cable or an outdated build of xSnes9x?

Retroplay
05-25-2009, 03:41 PM
Even if you de-select bilinear (or any other) filtering the display is still blurred.
Neither Snes9Xbox or ZsneXbox has that problem.
I have unfiltered/unblurred clean 'n crisp display on those.
I use the official RGB Euro-scart connector.

Chaosritter
05-25-2009, 03:58 PM
As i said, i can't see any difference to the real SNES, and i got mine at the age of 8 (and i've spent a LOT of time with it). The only thing that bothers me are the black borders if you keep the original screen ratio, but that's the only difference.

Retroplay
06-06-2009, 02:26 PM

first of all what is file type you are using???
iso,bin/cue,img/ccd/cue??
bin/cue and img/ccd/cue are the best to use for pcsxbox.also i have checked the pcsxbox compatibility list over at xbox scene and the game does work.

well im using bin/cue stuff so i dont know, but this is with most of the games i have gotten for the PCSXbox, about 15% of the games that i have downloaded has been giving me the FSOD/Black screen, but i have looked over the list and i have seen i might have missed something in the settings of the emulator, so im going to try that then i will get back to you ^_^

im still getting the hang of modding, and other stuff :noob: but im wicked with a pc though so thanks for the help

Edit: ok, i found the problem, while reading over the stuff i have to do for the FF series games, i tried out the settings they have on the site, and it worked *overjoyed* ok i know but i like it when i barely have to read something and i can figure out the rest of the solution by myself ^_^

thanks again xcalibur for the link to the site

Arrghh, I feel like I'm going crazy!

Over the last week I think I've downloaded all the emulator & rompacks here and at the same time have set up a ftp connection between my computers, a router & the xbox.

After a lot of fiddling (all of this network/ftp stuff is new to me) I am finally able to see the xbox harddrive contents through a ftp program (cuteftp pro)!

the problem however is, that all my transfers seem to stop when they're half finished! :(

I'm gettingerror notices like: ERROR:> [28-10-2009 14:55:30] Connection closed; transfer aborted

or

ERROR:> [28-10-2009 15:16:25] Can't write to data socket. Socket error = #10053

I've turned off my firewall (sunbelt personal firewall) & avg anti-virus software.

It is like it can transfer video files without a problem, but have issues predominantly with zip (rar) files (I think).

Browsing the net I've learned there is a limit to how many characters a filename can consist of on the xbox hd, though I figger the packs I download here are pre-configured to work straight out of the box!

What ftp program can I best use connecting to the xbox?

cheers

R

EDIT:

Interesting, trying to individually transfer virtualboy roms to the xbox, I've found out removing komma's in the filename of failed roms did the trick!! After removing the komma it was possible to transfer the roms. Does this ring a bell here with anybody? Maybe I need to change a setting in my xbox/ftp program/router to be able to get the xbox accept filenames with a komma?

Retroplay
10-28-2009, 04:39 PM
Commas are "illegal" characters on the XBOX filesystem.
They must be removed from any file names before transferring to XBOX.
I have uploaded two small apps that will do this for you.
Download them here (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?w4ymz2irynj). :)

plugexpert
10-28-2009, 05:50 PM
Thnx for that Retroplay! I already found a lill app myself called XboxFileRenamer, though I'm not sure if it just shortens the length to the xbox standard.

Having renamed files, I still come across this error notice in cute ftp when transferring files:
'child transfer failed',..

... although I can find stuff about it through google ( This error may also occur when navigating a remote FTP site and entering a folder that contains a Table of Contents (TOC) file (such as index.txt), in which case CuteFTP Home goes offline and becomes unresponsive. Under those circumstances, see KBase Article ID 10308. )...it doesn't really help solve anything!

Meh, any known ftp programs pre-configured to work with the xbox?

Retroplay

I use FlashFXP and never had any problems.

plugexpert
10-29-2009, 12:11 PM
I think it has something to do with how many files at the same time the ftp program tries to send to the xbox. I'm not sure how to set this up in the configuration or what is exactly the best number.

xcalibur
10-29-2009, 06:32 PM
you should try ftping with xbox media centre as that shortens the file names to suit.

Retroplay
10-29-2009, 10:34 PM
That's right, it also removes illegal characters.

plugexpert
10-30-2009, 02:42 AM
yeah, I'll look into ftp'ing with the media center. Have just installed flashfxp as well and am now searching for the correct settings as I'm getting the same error notices ( 502 pasv not implemented, 426 connection closed, file opening failed).

Thing is I can transfer some files/sometimes (renamed them all using the special renaming apps), but then in the middle of the batch it just stops. I noticed during a bunch of C64 roms, that the transfers stopped when trying to send files featuring the number '10', strange.

Nah, pretty much all arcade emulators for XBOX are based on MAME 0.84 which is quite outdated, thereby they're rather choosy about their roms. Try to get another version of your game or place the BIOS files inside the game.zip.

Also, there's quite a amount of games that won't run at all, as i said, they're based on an outdated version of MAME.

Varao
11-17-2009, 05:34 PM
I will try that as well because I reloaded the bios zip and tried both the options inside coinops for the Neogeo custom bios enabled and disabled neither worked the rom freezes on the loading screen and I get no errors at all and its only for the NeoGeo games everything else runs fine. These Roms run on Kawa-X just fine but id like it all in one place I tried to use the 2 NeoGeo.zips from the Kawa-X but then I get a Bios error. So Im still stuck and I would really like to get these Neo games running since they are among some of my favorites. Ill try to place the bios inside the roms and see what happens thanks again all!

A lil' question. Why don't you make a DAT out of the romset version based on each emulator? Is not that hard to accomplish IMO

Retroplay
11-17-2009, 06:58 PM
Clrmame doesn't recognize XBOX executable (xbe) files, so unless BritneysPairs also compiled a Win32 exe it's not possible for clrmame to import anything.

cOcO!
11-17-2009, 07:02 PM
o snap

but what about using mame 0.84 to get the DAT and see if it works with the xbox version?

Retroplay
11-17-2009, 07:11 PM
You could do that, it's just that the various CoinOPS builds have some drivers imported from newer MAME builds (NeoGeo, CPS1/2 etc).
So using MAME 0.84 as a base for a dat file would still leave some games out. :(

Varao
11-17-2009, 07:47 PM

xcalibur
11-17-2009, 07:53 PM
the cps1,cps2 and neogeo drivers have not changed since mamedox 1.1.
the only drivers that have changed are the new drivers that have been added for the new games.
@varao those neogeo roms will never work on coinops because if they work on kawax then there is no way that they will work on coinops as kawax is based on a much older romset.
to get the correct romset just download the roms from the first post in the coinops thread.theya re all correct,it is also pointless updating sets all the time for coinops because they are exactly the same with each release.
so download the roms from jackhammers first post in the coinops thread and they will work.

first of all the newest uni-bios will not work as you need an older version second of all do not put any bios files into any rom files as you do not need to do this so dont waste your time.
this is what to do....i have uploaded the correct neogeo bios which i use here.

once you download it,delete your old neogeo.zip bios in your roms folder and put this one in.do not unrar the neogeo.zip file just leave it.
then load up coinops and go to your settings in the main rom select screen and go to the option scan all your roms, then once that is finished try your neogeo games again.

edit to add/tell me varao did you have an older version of coinops before the one you have now??
because if you just overwrote the old version of coinops with the new version then you will have problems.you basically have to delete al the files in the folder apart from videos, screenshots, roms and you also have to delete the gamesave in T and U data folders in your E drive.
if the bios i have uploaded does not make a difference then do a clean install of the emulator by deleting everything except screenshots, videos, roms and also the gamesave which is called babe.....in you t and u data folders.
then after that install the emulator.
make sure you have the newest version coinops regnite r3.

I havent touched in in a long time since I have a MVS cab but I built at Mame machine out of an old Soul edge machine so I found coinops so its all new from the first post on this thread that Retro posted.

Im not sure if the one that is on this thread is the R3 or not. But its the only version and romset I have so I got my fingers crossed. I will try all this when I get home tonight thanks again!

Just got the neogeo.zip and it contains the same exact files that I am using from the romset that Retro posted perhaps a clean delete and re-install of everything?

xcalibur

if you have no had coinops on your xbox before then just try the neogeo.zip for now.
if like i said it dose not work then do a clean install of the emulator but remember not to delete you roms and screenshots and also delete the gamesave called babe...
here is the newest version of coinops...

the version you have is an older version, there are a lot of new games have been made playable since that old version.
the download includes 10 of the new games that were added along with the 10 preview videos which coinops can now play.
also here are the rest of the roms that were added, make sure and put them in the rom folder.

heres what to do once you have finished downloading.
1.delete all the files in your coinops emulator folder BUT NOT roms, screenshots.
2.use your xbox dashboard file explorer and go to you E drive and look for T and U data folders.
3.go into both of these folders and look for saves called babe....there should be some numbers after the word babe, delete them.like i said there are folders called these in both T and U data.
4.put all the new roms into your old roms folder, icluding the ones from the emulator you just downloaded.
5.install the emulator wherever you have your roms folder and screenshots.
6.reset your xbox and load it up.

just so you know in the options go to settings and you can choose which music track you want to play and also because there are videos you can now choose to have videos and screenshots display at the same time.
also make sure and activate advanced settings, then once you have activated advanced settings use the back right trigger to get to them in the options...there are 2 extra screens full of settings for you to mess around with.
to turn on auto fire click down on the left thumstick and to get to the cheats menu.once you are ingame hit the back and white buttons to bring up the menu.

ok links have been deleted.
now onto this problem, even though the neogeo games arent working you still have about 30-40 new games to play with....did you notice the videos??
by the way try a game called osman......the unofficial sequel to strider.
now anout the neogeo problem..first it is nothing to do with memory because coinops uses a thing called vmm(virtual memory manager)because there isnt enough in the xbox for games that size.
can you go into your options and go into the advanced settings and look for the option called virtual memory configuration and make sure it is on the automatic option.

Final Burn Legends v1.1 added.

Readme:
Final Burn Legends 1.1

What's new:

-Added ability to select any Neo Geo BIOS. There are 23 different BIOS
types supported. UniBIOS 2.3 is the default and recommended. This is
saved per game, so if a user finds a game that the UniBIOS does not work
well for they can change the BIOS for that game and it is saved
separately. When a game starts the first thing that is displayed is the
UniBIOS startup screen. Press A, B, and C (by default this is Xbox X, B,
and A) to setup the BIOS. This is only needed once per game. The user
can set the game to AES or MVS mode, change the region, and disable the
hardware test (green screen). This will make games start a lot faster.
During emulation, press P1 Start and P1 Coin to bring up the in-game
BIOS settings. There is a great cheat database built in with codes for
all games.

-Added suport for Ironclad / Chotetsu Brikinger. The region must be set
to USA or Japan or the game won't boot. When the UniBios 2.3 screen
appears, press Xbox B + X + A to start the BIOS setup where you can
change the region to USA or Japan. The default region is Europe so the
game will not work if this step is skipped.

-Fixed NVRAM saving for CPS2 games

-Added option to overclock the 68K CPU used in many games. Games that
use this CPU include CPS2, CPS2, Neo Geo, Cave, and others. Set it to
300% for games like Metal Slug 1, 2, ESP Rade and it will get rid of all
slowdown. If any game that uses this CPU has slowdowns then increase the
CPU speed and it may fix the issue. It also may cause bugs in the game.

-Added alternate ways to display the in game emulation menu. This will be
useful for players who use controllers without a right analog stick.

The choices are:

Right Analog Click
Left Trigger + Right Trigger
Back + Start
Left Trigger + Back
Right Trigger + Back

-Added option to display all games, parents, or clones. This applies
to the ROM browser and all filters. This does not apply to the Favorites
list.

-Added option to highlight parent sets. That way a user can browse
all the games and quickly pick out a parent ROM.

-Arcade images can now be viewed from the ROM browser. Select a game
and press the Start button. The images go in:

Control panel images - D:\Images\cpanel
Marquee images - D:\Images\marquee
Cabinet images - D:\Images\cabinet
Flyer images - D:\Images\flyers
In game screenshots - D:\Images\snap
Title screenshots - D:\Images\title

Press left and right on the D-Pad to go to the next or previous image.
Use the left analog stick to move the image
Use the right analog stick to zoom in or out.

-The MAME history can now be viewed from the ROM Browser. Select a game
and press the Back button

-Added DIP switch settings to most games. This can cause problems for
some games. Most of the time it works perfectly.

-Added an option to disable DIP switches. If a game runs strangely,
try disabling DIP switches.

-Change the crashes error message to be more generic

-Removed a few Genesis games that were causing the emulator to crash

-Fixed a bug where the Option screen wasn't loaded when a PGM game ran
out of memory or a ROM was invalid.

-Fixed a bug where the Flicker Filter wasn't applied when a game
started. I have no way to test this fix so if it is still broken please
post in this thread. Try testing a Neo Geo Game, Toaplan, Psykio, Cave,
CPS2, and Sega game to see if it works for all the different cores.

-Added an option to disable Hiscore saving. Hiscore saving is disabled
by default. This is on a per game basis. If a game works fine the first
time it's played, but then has problems the next time, it may be because
of the Hiscore saving. It can be found in the General Options menu.

-Cleaned up the source so that all cores use the same GUI files

-Added some defensive code to make the emulator more stable. Hopefully
this will eliminate the random crashes when saving a screenshot,
savestates, etc...

-Fixed a bug that caused a corrupt ini file when the button A was
pressed when there were no games

-Fixed some bugs where the default controller setting wasn't used

-Added an option to disable video previews. If you are not going to use
them then disable this option. It will speed up the ROM browser

-Added option to disable frame skipping. I can't think of one reason
why anyone should do this since it will cause audio problems and
slowdowns if a game can't run fullspeed. It is automatically disabled
when it is not needed. Forcing it to be disabled all the time is not
recommended. However, this was requested so I added it.

-Fixed a bug where centered text wasn't always centered.

-Disabled Neo Geo save states. These were too buggy and many games
crashed the emulator. This may be related to memory problems with the PC
port, my code, or something else.

-Removed most of the debugging code. This should add a speed up.

-Added an image viewer.

-Fixed a bug where the Main Menu video would play after exiting a game.

-Added the Main Menu video paths to the skin ini file. This way a user
can create a skin that uses different videos and provide them with the
skin.

-Added Kenshiro's fixes for Neo Geo and Psykio:

New Psykio games that now work:

Gunbarich
Mahjong G-Taste
Tetris the Absolute The Grand Master 2
Tetris the Absolute The Grand Master 2 Plus

NeoGeo fixes:

Speed up a bit more loading time
Reduce the amount of RAM on some P-X decrypting routines
Get svcpcbnd working (need a special graphic routine for the 2 * 32Mo
C-X)

I made many changes to the characters’ names for the Euro, Japan, and US
romsets for all of the corresponding CPS2 fighting games. It makes it
easier to apply a cheat pertaining to the correct character when you’re
playing a game where the name difference matters for the cheat you
select. For example, a Balrog cheat will be an M.Bison cheat if you’re
playing a rom without corrected cheat names for the region it came from.
For the parent Euro, US, and Japan CPS2 fighting games, this minor issue
has been remedied.

Notes:

You will need to do a new install. You cannot use any previous CPS2
save states, nvram, or game settings. The safest way to upgrade is:

1) Delete the save file for FBL 1.0
2) Copy the FBL 1.1 folder to the Xbox
3) Copy your Roms and screenshots from the FBL 1.0 folder to the FBL 1.1
folder

If you ignore this step and try to copy the new files over the FBL 1.0
directory, it will not work.

To upgrade any of the new skins to work with FBL 1.1:

1) Open the ini file for the skin
2) Add these lines to the bottom:

MovieEnabled=1
DisplayMode=2
HighlightParent=0
PauseGame=0
MainMenuMovieSwitchEnabled=1
MainMenuVideoPath0=D:\media\background1.xmv
MainMenuVideoPath1=D:\media\background2.xmv
MainMenuVideoPath2=D:\media\background3.xmv
MainMenuVideoPath3=D:\media\background4.xmv
MainMenuVideoPath4=D:\media\background5.xmv
MainMenuVideoPath5=D:\media\background6.xmv

I don't believe you. I think you're trying to generate a buzz. A regular xbox can't do such a complex thing. You'd need at least an iMac for that.
