View Full Version : (DC) Grandia II [NTSC-U]

After what seems like an interminable wait, Dreamcast owners can finally get their hands on the English version of Grandia II, the sequel to one of the Saturn's most beloved RPGs. Although supposedly a sequel, Grandia II does not pick up where the first Grandia left off. Instead, the game presents an entirely new storyline, replete with new characters, revamped visuals, a simplified experience system, and pseudo real-time combat. At the outset, it should be noted that Grandia II is an easier, more middle-of-the-road game than its predecessor, but there's still plenty to love about the game, whether you're an RPG newcomer, a veteran, or a dyed in the wool Game Arts junkie.

No problem, I'm more than happy to do it for a great game like this.
Make sure to save and switch discs after the battle with Valmar's body.(I'm assuming that brunch's and val's second disc is an echelon release if not you just won't have voices in certain parts after that battle)
wait Xhead.. which parts are these and how many are there?

Hey, that's wierd, I could have sworn this game only had one CD as an original copy on the dreamcast.
The second was just the soundtrack.
Can someone enlighten me as to why there are now 2? Was the game just split that way when ripped?

It's two cds because it wouldn't fit on one cdr they had to cut some of the audio to fit it that way, save and switch discs after the fight with valmars body

I can't get this game to burn correctly. It seems as if the files are slightly too large. Any help?
Valkerion
08-13-2007, 06:13 PM
i notcied that too, there 70mb oversized, if your burner cant do overburn you will have to use 800mb discs.
My burner cant do overburn so i guess ill need some new cds
hmm this is odd... eventhough its oversized and other oversized games dint burn (Maken X) this burned fine with CD juggler. CDJ said maken was too big and refused to even try but this went with no trouble. Gonna try disc 2, then maken agian soon. I doubt Maken will work but disc 1 of this did.

guys the game grandia 2 wont load on my dreamcast any other burnt game will (not including vampire chronicles) it just goes to the main dc screen and when i press "play game" my dreamcast restarts and gets me back to the main dc screen again.
i simply burnt the game with disc juggler on a 700 mb disc anyone with ideas?

Does the second disc have to be Self Boot if you're switching discs in the middle of the game?
Just want to know because my burner won't support overburn and I don't want to start the game without being able to finish it.
The only reason I'm able to play at all is because I found Kalisto's Bin/Cue and I can use Utopia.
Thanks

09-06-2007, 12:29 AM
Not really. When you get to the Inn you save and turn off. Then you boot the
second disc - Whether self boot or bootable w/ Utopia - load game and go!!
EDIT: My son finished this in 34 hrs. Don't know if that's good or not.

What are you having problems with? If it is my reupload of cd1, use WinRAR to
extract.
I have also edited post to show exact file sizes. Make sure you have complete file. On Mediafire I often
get incomplete files, but never on Mega or Momupload.

I can extract 1, but I can't extrace 2 and 3... It just gives me this...
! C:\Documents and Settings\Adam\Local Settings\Temp\DC_Grandia2.part3.rar: You need to start extraction from a previous volume to unpack Grandia II.CD1.cdi
! C:\Documents and Settings\Adam\Local Settings\Temp\DC_Grandia2.part3.rar: No files to extract
dreamer cab
09-13-2007, 12:19 AM
It is quite simple. I put all three files in a folder. Use WinRAR, Dbl click part 1.
It should show [Grandia II.CD1.cdi] and [Grandia II.nfo]. Select all, extract
where you want. Burn and play. The cdi should be about 780M. The 3 files
combine into 1. You don't extract the 3 files separately!
If you have any probs. let me know...be specific.

Yes, it's your reupload of CD 1. Tried WinRAR; still doesn't work. The filesize for all 3 files, when rightclicking on the file and selecting "Properties", is 210 000 000 for parts 1 and 2, and 140 073 508 for the last part. By the way, the "Grandia II.nfo" file only shows up when I double click on "DC_Grandia2.part3.rar".
dreamer cab
09-13-2007, 07:18 AM
Jasan,
Right click on DC Grandia2.part1.rar - then select open with-=>WinRAR
Enter PW - You should then see Grandia II.CD1.cdi and the Grandia II.nfo file.
Highlight both and extract.
Am using WinRAR 3.20. I Dloaded it and tried it, it should work.
P.S. The file sizes you gave are correct. Should work good.

Thanks for the upload, but, Xiaopang states the first reason. The second
being that many users still use 56k...not sure, but seasons will change before
that download finishes on 56k. On the other hand, it is a mirror and other files
are still available. Multiple files are more desirable on large files.
Ever lost a download because of lightning, power surges, etc....thats why its
nice to break those into smaller files.

it's not so bad. depending on how good your line is, you can get 400-500MB in 24hours. also, loosing your download connection isn't that much of a problem, since megaupload supports download managers.

Hi, please read the request forum rules (http://snesorama.us/board/showthread.php?t=551). You can request a mirror of an existing
game/ost/manual in the appropriate thread (http://snesorama.us/board/showthread.php?t=17531) only.

Hi, please provide some more details regarding your problem:
1) Are you running this on an emu or real hardware?
2) How are you trying to run the game?
M.
Yeah, sorry about my lack of details. I was sleep deprived and grouchy. ^_^
Anyhow, I'm running it on real hardware, and using freebee's download for disc 2, and Dreamer's download of disc 1. I burned disc 1 at 16x using DAO RAW in Alcohol 120%, and it works perfectly.
I tried burning disc 2 at 16X, 8x, and 4x (as low as my burner would go) and I've succeeded in making 3 coasters. It just reads the disc and comes up to the Music CD screen. I've tried it with Utopia 1.1 and 1.5, no dice.
(PS Yes, Ive read the "How to use ISOs (http://snesorama.us/board/announcement.php?f=53&a=12)" sticky. I've burned a bunch of discs from here (6-7) and this is the first one I've had major irritation with.
I was really getting into this game, but I don't want to finish disc one and then be sad. :/
Any advice/suggestions/miracle fixes?
Maybe it's not selfboot, so try playing using the utopia boot cd.

The second link goes to a file called

When it should be called -
GrandIIcd2.part2.rar
I tried renaming but to no avail. I'm i doing something wrong here?

I wouldn't mind if you did burn it, because then I'd know if it was just me, or a universal problem. :)

update!
I just finished burning disc two with discjuggler and it works!
Use DISCJUGGLER, not Alcohol for disc 2.
That is all, we return you to your regularly scheduled programming. :D
Can someone who's previously burned this please confirm or deny that discjuggler is mandatory for disc 2?

Password is always dreamer (unless noted).

try out the obvious things first, make sure winrar installed is the most up to date version, if all else fails try out 7zip, make sure you've updated windows because winrar/7zip rely on some of the features of zip (windows), etc... either that or it corrupted while downloading.

Hey I'm not an uploader but I've been downloading and enjoying the ISO's you all have been posting here, I'd just like to say thank you for all the hard work and time you've all put into your downloads.
I appreciate it.
EDIT: PS - Momupload is sketchy, you gotta babysit it. I've found that if you're d/ling more than one file from "her" she likes to boot you.
EDIT2: PPS - Momupload screwed me over two times, both times part 2 downloaded to 150 - 160 mb instead of 200 mb, and then "finished" obviously causing the rars to not blend properly. The first time I didn't catch it until I tried to unpack the rar files. The second time I sat and watched the d/l and then it suddenly finished.... hours into my second attempt. This is the first time I've had a single transfer issue with momup. She's usually so much nicer to me..

yeah that will be the accuracy :D i guess you can add shenmue to the masterlist now ;)
I ended up just starting a torrent download. I'm sure freebee's mirror would have worked for me, but my connection mysteriously kicked out for a second while I was downloading his part 1 rar and I said screw it.
Starting to think that maybe I'm just not supposed to have Grandia 2. lol.
dreamer cab
03-31-2008, 07:46 PM
But your the HAL 9000. How can downloading this be that hard.
And yeah, Momupload has been having issues for the last month, hopefully
they will straighten things out soon. Maybe you need a different download
manager.
I've never tried using one of those, actually. Gosh this is a cool smiley :hadoken:
But yeah, so my torrent worked out. It was the echelon release so the FMV's are super low-qual, but at least it's not choppy like their Skies of Arcadia release. :P
dreamer cab
04-01-2008, 06:54 AM
The only way to play Skies is the GDI dump with emu or buy a commercial copy.
There's no straight-up NTSC-U release? That's a bummer. Not too hard to come by in used game shops though.
dreamer cab
04-01-2008, 07:23 PM
There is a release, very buggy though. Choppy video...etc..
Dom29
04-02-2008, 01:52 AM
its not buggy, its just been compressed, it doesn't hinder the game experience, if you think 2 seconds (or less) of slight lag will ruin the game, it really doesn't and you'll soon forget about it, besides there are other releases of this game (by other groups) that don't contain the compression because the games split. I'm thinking i might upload it for the people who dont like the lag. but you would require 99min CD-R's and have to put up with 4 CD's instead of two, oh and btw the ntsc-u and pal-e versions are virtually identical and it will work fine on your console (the echelon version) hehe :)

First, I personally don't have a PC in my room but I do have a dreamcast.
Thus, it's nice to lie in bed and play one of my favorite games of all time. Second, most of my computers are crap so it wouldn't be nice to see pixels glitching all over the place. Third, your in a dreamcast forum.... of course we like the dreamcast edition more.

Huh!? WOA WOA WOA!
You sayin that there's no working complete copy of Grandia 2?
I completed a burnt copy of Grandia 2 on my DC around last year when my site was still up *I still have the image if the image is the problem*.
Mine is indeed patched by Echelon and the only thing I hated about the burn was during later cutscenes
When they took off in that giant sword which is actually a ship. From there on, the game would ask to put in disc 2 and after a min, it'd just skip the cutscene.
I hated how short the game was. Good story, bad length wise. Seems like the only lengthy storylines besides some of the FF games I played so far for the newer consoles than DC *PS2* was most of the Tales Of series.
Reguardless, I got mine completed on the DC console. Didn't ever try it on emulator however.

yeah i tried a few burnt copies of it, all of which have the problem i stated as with happyasthma and freebee uploads, dream cabs uploads fixed the problem that happyasthmas and freebees uploads had, but only up to a point.
at the end of the game, Dreamers up has a freeze problem when the last boss does a move called spellbinder.
but anyway, Echelon folks had already stated that Grandia 2 was the worst work they ever did for the DC, leaving them to re-work on it a bunch of times. :pancakes:

We definitely should have waited and tested a lot more before we
released Grandia II, but we didn't. This led to one of the biggest
messes in the DC scene so far, and definitely our worst mistake thus
far. We don't leave our supporters empty-handed though, and today
we bring you the 100% working repack of Grandia II. We completed the
whole game with this version and it is 100% working.
We started the rip from scratch, so it is split up on the CD's a
bit differently. This time we did it better and managed to save
some space for self-boot. The FMV was downsampled and so was
the audio.
You must manually swap CD's in this rip. After defeating Valmar's
Body, You take off in the Granasaber to St. Heim Holy City.
You must visit the Inn in St. Heim Holy City, Save your game, and
power off CD1. Then load up CD2, load up your saved game, and
continue play. Please note that this CD swap is MANDATORY to
progress through the game. If you do not swap CD's at this point,
you will face freeze(s) later in the game.
Sorry for our screwup previously, and enjoy this nice game in it's
complete form.
- --- Game Features And Information -------------------------------->
In Grandia II, Ryudo has been hired to protect a young priestess who
must participate in a ceremony to halt the encroaching rebirth of
Valmar, the God of Darkness. Embroiled between the forces of good
and evil, Ryudo must follow his destiny and save the people he
detests so much.
Grandia II marks the return of GameArts' classic franchise. Offering
a wide array of characters, a deep and involving storyline and a
combat system above and beyond all others, Grandia II harnesses the
power of the Sega Dreamcast.
You'll interact with hundreds of characters as you work to stop
the rebirth of Valmar, the God of Darkness. Watch as the story
unfolds through cinematic cut-scenes with voice-over. Grandia II is
an RPG of epic proportions that no serious gamer should miss.
Game Features:

high-resolution CG graphics.

`- Proudly Presents:
Game.....: Grandia II CD2 Movie Addon (C) Ubisoft & Game Arts
Origin...: USA - NTSC - Filename.....: E-GR2ADD.001
Released.: December 8th, 2000 - Format.......: CDRWIN (BIN/CUE)
Platform.: Sega Dreamcast (DC) - CD(s)........: 2
Info.....: 3 RARS / 80 MINS - Please.......: Read Release Notes
- --- Release Notes ------------------------------------------------>
Before I start off, let me make one thing very clear, this addon
should only be used by advanced users who know what they are doing.
And, please be familiar with the normal .NFO for this game, and how
the rip works before you mess around with this addon.
Anyway, lets start off. This addon includes all movies for CD2 of
Grandia II. So, if you download CD1, you can master your own CD2
rather than downloading mostly the same files over again.
These RAR archives contain the following files, make sure you
UnRAR each and every single one of these:
- SFD_ADXB.PVR
- CG01.SFD
- CG02.SFD
- CG02A.SFD
- CG03.SFD
- CG04.SFD
- CG05.SFD
- CG05A.SFD
- CG07.SFD
- CG07A.SFD
- CG08.SFD
- CG09.SFD
- CG09A.SFD
- CG10.SFD
- CG11.SFD
- CG11A.SFD
- CG12.SFD
- CG13.SFD
- CG14.SFD
- CG15.SFD
- CG16.SFD
- CG16A.SFD
- CG17.SFD
- CG17A.SFD
All of these files are contained on DISC1. Obviously, in order to
master DISC2, you must first read in all files from DISC1 to your
hard disk or extract them from the BIN/CUE. Once you have the whole
directory tree of CD1 extracted to some directory on your hard disk,
do the following.
- Copy the SFD_ADXB.PVR that you just UnRAR'd to your /DATA directory
of your Grandia II CD1 directory tree. When prompted to overwrite,
hit Yes.
- Copy all CGXX.SFD files that you just UnRAR'd over to your /LOGO
directory of your Grandia II CD1 directory tree. When prompted to
overwrite, hit Yes.
You have now overwritten all movies from CD1 with the fresh ones
from CD2 that you just unrarred.
Now master a CD with your favorite burning program (Easy CD Creator
and Nero both work well) and use the following settings:
- Mode 1
- Joliet
- Long Filename Support
- Volume label: GRANDIA2_DISC2_ECHELON
- DO NOT USE ISO LEVEL 1 IF YOU ARE IN NERO.
And burn this baby off, it should work perfectly with your CD-Loader.
If something does not work, refer back to the beginning of this
NFO and download the full CD2.

Just wanted to say thanks (especially to MrHappyAsthma for the single link dl's) for this great game. 2.43mb/s dl makes this a breeze and actually faster (and more reliable) than trying to make my own iso with my gimmicky cd-rom drive here!

The disc was freezing in a cut-scene after you go back to Roan's city, but it was repacked May 22th 2009. Now everything is working fine. If you have the old version, grab the repacked version and load your save normally.
Grandia II (Single Disc) (Repack)
Dream Resurrection
Dream Resurrection or DCRES is a project maintained by TuxTheWise. The goal is making high quality releases, caring about dummy (faster loadings), file order (GD or custom that makes loadings faster and reader noise quieter), downsampling (the best quality with available space) and selfboot. Please always see readme files of each game, they always have important information. Feedback? Suggestions? Problems? Fell free to send a PM.

Grandia II [Single Disc] (NTSC-U) *Repack*
------------------------------------------
The game was freezing on a cut-scene after you go back to Roan's city. It took a while but I found
out the problem. For some reason, the song that played on the cut-scene was freezing the game if
it was downsampled, but after I restored the original file everything worked again. It increased
only around 600kb on overburn, so I doubt you'll have any problems burning this. At least, I
hadn't.
I hope this is the final release, I can't work on this game anymore LOL.
Don't forget reading the original readme below, it has important information. If this repack is
the first download for you of my release, be sure to read the overburn information.
=====================
Original readme file:
=====================
---------------------------------
Grandia II [Single Disc] (NTSC-U)
---------------------------------
Ripped: Nothing (!).
Downsampled: All sounds monoized (including video's); voices downsampled; videos downsampled.
Source: Echelon's release, GD dump.
=== ATTENTION: ===
This release is for standard 80min CD-R but it needs around 5mb overburn (< 1%). I tested burning
this in two different brands of CD-R and in one CD-RW, burning ended without errors and all data
could be read with success in my PC DVD drive. Both CD-R booted and worked alright in my Dreamcast.
The boot binary is in the "critical" zone (overburnt), so if your game boots nice it won't present
any errors after since other files are in the "safe" zone.
So, for burning, be sure to use a nice brand 80min CD-R. Getting a bigger CD is not necessary. Burn
in a good speed (4x, 8x or 16x) and I doubt you'll have any problem.
To burn this with DiscJuggler, you have to go in the "Advanced Tab" and mark "Overburn CD", else it
will say media is too small and it will cancel recording. If you're using Alcohol 120%, you'll have
to figure out how to record by yourself.
==================
My last release was a split release following Echelon's file separation. However, some people were
complaining that the game was freezing in a part in second disc, so I had to take a look on that.
I was bored anyway, so I took a time to analyse this game more deeply and see if I could make it
fit on a single disc. All single discs versions of Grandia II that I saw had the videos ripped,
what is really annoying.
I'll save you from listening all my story (and myself of writing it all), and I'll tell you the
final part. After some (correction: a lot) of experiments, I finally could finish this release. All
sounds were monoized, as usual, using high quality decoders. Voices were downsampled, and
fortunately they didn't got annoying or too bad. Videos were downsampled to the maximum I could
without making them crap. I used VBR for them, and that was the decisive factor that made the space
enough. Note that videos are ugly, they're far from perfect, but you can watch them without
problems. And by the way, if you check their size you'll realize that it's a miracle that they got
so good. I tried to downsample the skills videos, but if I changed them the game froze, so they got
intact. I also shrinked the AFS files to make the more space I could.
I used Echelon's main binary, and game files are all there, so I'm sure the game will work until
the end without errors. Oh, and I was able to figure out a better file order than last time, so
loading times are faster and reader's noise is very reduced.
Did I make history again? Well, I hope. Enjoy Grandia II with full content on a single disc.
Features of my release:
- Not corrupted files at all, it was made with GD dump files.
- Nothing ripped, and the game is on a single disc.
- All downsampling were made using high quality decoders and encoders.
- Used custom file order based on GD's. It means faster loadings and less Dreamcast reader noise.
- Selfboot.
About the game:
- It has VGA Box support.
Other comments:
- "Extras" folder in the pack contains some useless stuff.
- Release comes with manual and covers.

Audio is already 22khz, so downsampling it more would be crazy. Well, in fact I used 16khz for voices, but Echelon has just monoized everything, I checked it.

You'll need to overburn the disc in 5mb, like readme says. For that, you'll need to mark the box "overburn" in DiscJuggler configuration. In the demo version, it won't allow overburn, so you'll have to find another way to burn it. An alternative is using Alcohol 120% (you'll have to find the option for overburn, I don't know because I don't use it) or mounting the image with Daemon Tools and use another burner program that supports Dreamcast discs and overburn feature. Or maybe buying/getting a full version of DiscJuggler...

Correction: Audio in Echelon's release (split) has not been downsampled, sorry for the mistake.
Note: My release is freezing on the bridge after you go back to Roan's city. I'm checking the problem and trying to solve it.

I'm about to get there in my game. Uh oh! I'll let you know how it goes. I'm crossing my fingers!
Will my save work with other 2 disk copies if your disk doesn't work properly?

Done, my single disc version has been repacked, and it's not freezing anymore. Look for it above or click here (http://snesorama.us/board/showpost.php?p=360779&postcount=172).

Badass. I was going to get the 1 CD version but I wanted better sound and video quality. Glad I picked up those $2 5-pack CDRs. :coffee:

Hi, i don't want to sound like a jerk....but can someone tell me which is the best release ?
I don't have time to burn and test every release.
Using Pal-DC.
Since it is split up in XX parts (i don't know why people are using less the torrent-system....i guess SEGA doesn't care too much about sharing older games xD), do you need all parts to unwrap the 2 cdi files or can you do it seperately (only download some parts to unwrap the first cdi file , and then proceed to the other one)?
I have some storage problems with my PC .
Since it is NTSC-U version, i guess there is only 60hz avaible....
thanks for answers.

Ok get the dcres version its region free and works the best. I would reccomend the 1 cd version it requires a little overburn but works great with no glitches if not you need to get the 2 cd version and that one is just crazy so get the 1 cd version download all the file then extract it will give the cdi

Hi, thanks for the answer.
But why is the 2 CD version crazy? XD
So the 1 CD version is just as good qualitywise like a 2 CD version?
But with having almost no space left in my storage...i think i can only go for the 1 CD version anyways.

Hi, me again.
Has someone tried the version released by OVERRiDE using the dump of Tosec Group?
Also there is a Pal-release....(but i guess both Pal and NTSC are similar contentwise and there is no censorship in either of the version).

ok, now i just wasted a Verbatim disc (800MB /90Min)
I downloaded the DCRes version, unwrapped the package.
No problem so far.
Now i am starting DiscJuggler 6.x
Selecting the file. In advanced i enabled overburn, clicked on Mode 2 , Block 2336 , TOC : CD-XA
Starting to burn at 6x speed. After a while i am asked for another new CD?
wtf......
All the options that worked with any other .cdi image.
What now?
If i am disabling Overburn-option it says, that source file is bigger than CD!
Don't wanna waste another disc for nothing.

You'll need overburn for DCRES release...
Check my signature for the FAQ, you'll read there that DJ 6.x is unsupported by me, and I recommend using DJ 4.x (there is a link for download it there).

thanks, i should have read that you unsupported 6.x
burnt it successfully now at 4x speed with DJ 6.x ......
i will try it now whether there are problems with it.
thanks for your rip and support anyways.

Have played it about 6 hours now, so far so good :D.
The game is good. The fights could have been a bit more refreshing, more character interaction and steady voice output (instead of just rarely use of it), then this game would have been really amazing.
Well can't have everything....
Also, thanks for the release TuxTheWise!

Hello,
I am looking for a version that would fit on a 700mb disc.
I was wondering which one would work? I have tried one of them and it ran perfectly until the "bridge" part where Ryundo's horns starts reacting.
I tired downloading the repacked one on one disc, but it wouldn't overburn on DJ4 or Alcohol. (Probably my burner problem).
Any advise would be great.
Thanks

DJ4 never worked well for me. Try 3.5 or A120%.
